After the arriving of the membrane contactors to Ecoparc 2 in Montcada i Reixac in summer 2022, EBESA completed the installation of the connections with the rest of the system. Moreover, control loops were implemented and programmed to ensure the correct and safe operation of this process.
During the last months, tests with clean water were carried out to ensure the start-up of the equipment and afterward the real effluent of the system started to be processed in different cycle time and pH conditions, achieving results in the firsts tests of more than 60% of the nitrogen recovered at pH 11.5.
This technology allows treating the effluent from the ultrafiltration of the thermophilic anaerobic digestion to reduce the ammonium present in it and obtain ammonium sulfate, a biofertilizer whose application in agriculture will be tested by the IRTA.
The treatment system will be completed with the reverse osmosis with regenerated membranes, which will allow obtaining clean water applicable for irrigation. This part of the process will be finally done in the Eurecat’s laboratory in Manresa.
