Today, 24th of October, is the International Day against Climate Change. Every year, the United Nations Organization (ONU) promotes actions against global warming and its effects. According to the European Environment Agency, in 2020 the EU countries emitted more than 3,000 Mt CO2 equivalent. Although it was 11 % fewer emissions than previous year, it is still a huge amount of greenhouse emissions what we are producing.
In agreement to the last IPCC report AR6, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, we cannot condemn the planet to a path of no return. In order to reduce the increment of climate hazards and the risk to ecosystems and humans, it is necessary to implement actions that limit global warming to close to 1.5 °C in the near-term.
With LIFE INFUSION project, we want to contribute to a more sustainable world by developing a treatment system for urban waste effluents from both landfill leachate and liquid digestate from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. The INFUSION solution will produce biobased products to be used in agriculture as fertilizers, reclaimed water suitable for fertigation and aquaculture, as well as biogas and biomethane to be used as biofuel in vehicles or energy. Not only are these by-products contributing to reduce the environmental impact of both waste effluents, but also the low-carbon technology used will decrease the overall carbon footprint of urban waste management.
